Atma Power Yoga is suitable for Beginners,
or for those with some previous
experience with yoga.
Energising yoga designed to
bring out the internal warrior of the
practitioner, tone muscles, and increase
determination and vigour.
The Atma Yoga styles we practise aid
physical and mental well-being, and
restore harmony in the body. We carry
stress and strain in our muscles, in the
fibre of our body. Yoga literally irons
out the stress and conveys on us a
positively alive and dynamic feeling.
After yoga we see the world with a fresh
clarity and awakened consciousness. The
exercises are designed to re-align the
energies of the body. In effect, the
physical realm is fine-tuned to such an
extent that it clears up and cleans out
our mental world. To summarise, we feel
great!
For those of you who want to find out
more detailed information about the
origins of Yoga from millennia ago here
it is....
Yoga - History, Origins and Purpose
Yoga is a Sanskrit word which refers to
the connection between the individual Self and the Supreme Intelligent
Force in the universe.
Everyone knows a little about the different
asanas, or postures, performed in yoga. Originally there were
8,400,000 asanas. A self-controlled yogi alone in the forest for
many many years would meditate on Vishnu, the Supreme Being, in the core
of his heart. In the neophyte stage he would perform asanas to
help align the energy in his body. Eventually the yogi could gain
mastery such that as his spirit was departing from his physical body (at
death) he would have control over his next destination. The
ultimate aim was to be reunited with the Supreme in a loving
relationship.
Yoga - Difficulties
on the Path
However the pitfalls were many. Because
the path was so arduous few could succeed. Often a yogi would be
side-tracked by allurements of sense enjoyment, or philosophical
misconceptions. Or, as one progresses somewhat in the process, a yogi
could develop mystic powers. These powers give one an extraordinary
command over the ordinary laws of nature, such as instant travel to
distant places without aid of a machine. A yogi can become victim of his
false ego and begin to revel in his own greatness. In this way he loses
humility, a requirement for a true spiritualist.
Yoga for Today
Over the course of millennia different
yoga systems are recommended by great sages according to the people's
ability at a given time. Yoga as we think of it today is a process that
was practised in the mystical Age of Satya. According to the Srimad
Bhagavatam (SB1.1.10) people in the current Age of Kali are not so
qualified. Most of us do not have the capability to endure intense inner
austerity, controlling and focusing the mind and senses over the course
of many years as yogis millennia ago could do. Therefore the
Srimad Bhagavatam - the conclusion of all Vedic literature and
philosophy of India - states towards the end of it's 18,000 verses (SB
12.3.52) that the recommended process of self-realisation for this day
and age is Kirtan Yoga.
Kirtan is the chanting of
powerful mantras accompanied by sweet and melodious music. If we know
the philosophy behind the mantras that's good, however mantra science
works even independent of knowledge. Still, in our present condition,
Atma Yoga and other Schools of Yoga teach techniques that are important
aids to bring peace and tranquillity to body and mind. The
practise of asanas like we do in Atma Yoga stabilizes body and mind as
a first step on the yoga ladder to ultimate success. Yoga exercises
along with Kirtan and meditation, and preferably a vegetarian diet, are
all very good quality practises that anyone can take up - and which all
improve our experience of life, and make us happy!
