“The chants with Tim last night were breath-taking. I felt something deep inside. Thank you very
much” Veronica
The kirtan concert with Tim McEvitt - manager of Lake Isle Retreats and former monk - is sure to quench the
thirst of your soul and help you delve deeper on the inward journey.
"Kirtan" means you'll be singing along in the 'call-and-response' fashion used in the
traditional temple music of India. Kirtan has become extremely popular in yoga, meditation and holistic
centres in America in recent years and it's only a matter of time before it takes off in Ireland as
well. It is a meditation experience, but it's more than meditation in that it incorporates singing,
music, rhythm, wisdom and relaxation. And, on some occasions, the tempo of the chant can build up to a dance!
So then it becomes meditation with fun and exercise.
Kirtan with Tim is a relaxed affair. Simultaneously kirtan is a sadhana, or spiritual
practice that hundreds of thousands of people around the globe do in order to help improve themselves. Tim says: “For
myself, I think it’s good to try to improve myself. Then I’m in a better position to help others. We help
others by our presence, association and good example, and not necessarily by chasing them with our offers of
help as we see it”
On Sept 21st in Ashbourne we'd be delighted to welcome you to a special event where you can sing, relax, chill
out and meditate. The chants and mantras in the Sanskrit language only have a few words, and song sheets are
provided. Don't worry if you've never attended a kirtan before. Most of the other attendees won't have
either!
Sri Prahlada is a kirtan chant
master in Australia. You can read about what he says about kirtan here:

Quotes about Kirtan
- Eastern mantra chant music
“. . . Through that one-pointedness (of chanting), one can merge in the Divine
Being and experience the bliss of one's true self. By letting the mind expand in the sound of divine
chanting, each one of us can enjoy the peace born of one's inherent divinity.”
- Mother
Amma
“We should keep chanting all the time, or as much as possible. Once you do that
you realise the benefit. The response that comes from chanting is in the form of bliss, or
spiritual happiness, which is a much higher taste than any happiness found here in the material
world”
-
- George Harrison (of the
Beatles)
“One can realise God through kirtan alone”
- Swami Sivananda, spiritual teacher and founder of a modern
yoga school
“Kirtan will be the yoga of the 21st century
- Swami Satyananda Sarasvati, spiritual teacher and founder of a modern yoga
school

About Tim McEvitt
Tim (pictured here in 1995) lived as a monk for 8 years in an ISKCON temple arising
at 4.00am each day for morning kirtan chants. He travelled to India twice to learn and explore, and he trained
under Sivarama Swami for 10 years trying to understand something about the deep essence of kirtan. He's
studied the 18,000 verse Bhagavata Purana - an important Sanskrit literature - under dozens of teachers, gurus
and swamis. Tim says: "The moments of greatest inner happiness in my life have been in kirtans in
Ireland, England, Germany, Hungary and India, and I like to try to share that experience with
others".
